Ickworth House Park & Gardens, The National Trust

A taste of classical Italy brought to Suffolk – discover the spirit of Ickworth. There’s so much to see indoors and outdoors at this beautiful National Trust country estate with great visitor facilities including ample parking, West Wing café, Porter’s Lodge café, children’s play area, plant centre and gift shop. Just four miles from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

Explore Ickworth House - built as an 18th century Italian-style showcase for the Hervey family’s collections of Georgian silver, Regency furniture, books and fine paintings – the grand central Rotunda dominates the landscape. Inside, view the impressive sculpture, the Fury of Athamas by John Flaxman or discover impressive family portraits by artists such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, Hogarth, Kauffman and Zoffany. There are many other fine paintings by Titian, Velásquez and Vigée Le Brun as well as a stunning collection of ambassadorial silverware by the finest Huguenot silversmiths of the 17th and 18th centuries. Find out about the Earl Bishop, the extraordinary man who created this amazing house and how his family continued his grand vision.

Downstairs, you can experience life in service in the 1930s in the newly restored Servants’ basement and share the real stories and memories of the people who kept this country estate running between the Wars. On Living History days, see the staff carry out their duties, see what the cooks are up to in the kitchen and hear the gossip of their daily lives.

Wander outside in the earliest Italian-style garden in the country with formal box borders, a Mediterranean Temple Garden and a magical Victorian stumpery full of shady ferns and plants. Our Walled Garden dates back to Tudor times with a stunning summer flower meadow. Or you can, admire the Earl’s Summer House, inspect the allotments and enjoy the views from the canal lake. If you are feeling adventurous, take one of our many walks or cycle trails in the stunning landscaped parkland and wander through woodland, meadows and forest or take in inspiring views across the estate

Throughout the year, we have many events and activities, such as Easter Egg Trails, half-term crafts and games, Outdoor Theatre, a Summer Wool Fair and autumn Wood & Craft Fair, sporting events and a fun-filled Christmas season, see our website for more details and prices.
