Children and Young People's Activities

Activities for children and families in the city

ChYpPS Open Access Sessions

ChYpPS is Cambridge City Council’s Children and Young People’s Participation Service. We run activities and projects all year round for children and families in the city.  All our work has a play focus and is designed to give families the opportunity to try new things.

The majority of our events take place outside on the green spaces across the city, as we feel it’s important that children have a connection with the natural environment and have the opportunity to experience risk in a managed way. Some of our activities include: Den building, Kelly kettles, whistle making, junk modelling, and arts and crafts. We also have a big red narrow boat on the river Cam, ‘The ChYpPS Community Play Boat’ which children access for moored sessions and river trips. The majority of our activities are aimed at primary school aged children. All sessions are free to attend and people can just turn up on the day.

ChYpPS Community Scrapstore

ChYpPS is continually looking for different types of play materials that challenge and enrich children’s play opportunities and experiences.  We are very proud of our Community Scrapstore which works with local business to source new and exciting play materials from waste products that business would normally throw away. Many of these materials get used on our sessions and the store opens to the public every Wednesday evening for people to purchase items.

School Play Pods

ChYpPS feel it’s important that children have a positive experience during lunchtime play in school, so they can challenge themselves, work better with others and settle back into classroom activities more relaxed in the afternoon. To help enrich children lunchtime play experiences, ChYpPS is working in partnership with Bristol Scrapstore to offer schools the opportunity to purchase a ‘Play-pod’. Play- pods are essentially sheds containing recycled play materials that children can get out and play with during lunchtime, items include: old buggy’s, suitcases, old phones, keyboards etc.. Part of the package includes mentoring for lunchtime staff along with continued re-rills for pods to insure materials remain fresh and stimulating for the children.

ChYpPS Adventures

ChYpPS also does bespoke packages that organisations can buy in. This work forms part of our ChYpPs adventures package. This package falls broadly under three main themes:

River Adventures: A relaxed calm way for children to learn about the river environment. Activities are designed to help children develop confidence, work together as a team and learn new skills.

Scrap Adventures: Offers a fun and creative experience for children and young people using recycled and scrap materials. Children get to explore their imagination whilst at the same time learning communication, negotiation and decision making skills.

Forest Adventures: A fantastic opportunity for children and young people to learn about the outdoors through practical and challenging activities. Children gain skills in problem solving, risk taking and teamwork.
