Days Out In Ely Fenland

Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, The National Trust

A window onto a lost Fenland landscape, Wicken Fen is home to a spectacular array of wildflowers, insects and birds. Trails, boat rides and a full family events programme.

It is the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve and one of Europe's most important wetlands, supporting an abundance of wildlife. There are more than 8,400 species, including a spectacular array of plants, birds and dragonflies.

The raised boardwalk and lush grass droves allow easy access to a lost landscape of flowering meadows, sedge and reed beds, where you can encounter rarities such as hen harriers, water voles and bitterns.

For those looking to explore even further, why not follow the ‘Fens Adventurer’ Wicken Way Route, a seven mile walk through the Fenland landscape encompassing hundreds of years of farming history.



Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill, The National Trust

After working up an appetite, head for Anglesey Abbey and Lode Mill, a beautiful Jacobean-style house with a working water mill. Take in the stunning views of the gardens from the restaurant or if the sun is shining move outside to the delightful picnic area.

The Farmland Museum & Denny Abbey
