Stansted Mountfitchet

Stansted Mountfitchet is a historic village with a number of attractive and interesting buildings so if you are looking for somewhere to stay overnight before your flight or have a few hours to kill before departure it is well worth a visit.

Come along to the award winning medieval Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village and travel back in time to Norman England of 1066. Meet the animals that roam freely throughout the 10 acre site, wander in and out of the many houses, view the scenes, smell the log fires burning and enjoy the ambience of an ancient bygone lifestyle and listen out for the echoes of long forgotten voices.

Within the Castle complex is the world famous House on the Hill Toy Museum which offers the visitor an amazing array of over 70,000 toys from the 19th Century to the 1980's. Excellent exhibitions of World War 1 & 2 memorabilia including a Home Front/Blitz display, a Rock 'n' Roll exhibition, film, TV and theatre memorabilia including life size figures from Star Wars, Dr Who and James Bond.  The Castle is open from mid-March to mid-November: https://mountfitchetcastle.com/

Stansted Windmill is a grade II* listed ancient monument given to the people of Stansted by Lord Blyth in 1934.  A classic example of a tower mill, Stansted Windmill is close to unique in having most of its original machinery with few replaced components. The Windmill is open for visiting every first Sunday afternoon of the month from April to October as well as on other special days including the annual August Bank Holiday Fete and the National Mills weekend in May https://www.stanstedwindmill.co.uk
