Alinea Quartet returns to Robinson College Chapel

After a “spectacular appearance” (Cambridge Critique) last year, the award-winning Alinea Quartet returns to Cambridge with a dazzling programme.

  • 22nd January 2025 - 22nd January 2025
  • 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free entrance for students!

For the third time, the Alinea Quartet will perform in the beautiful accoustics of the Robinson College Chapel – bringing with them a varied programme that once more includes a work of Robinson College’s own Director of Music, Jeremy Thurlow.

The Five Pieces by Erwin Schulhoff open the concert: five little gems of anarchic humor, virtuoso escapades and folky melodies – a microcosm of the cultural richness and political upheavals in Vienna after World War I.

Next is Jeremy Thurlow’s String Quartet No. 1, originally premiered in 2008 but now heard for the first time in a revised version. The characteristic charm and beauty of Thurlow’s musical language, described as ‘seductive, innovative, full of freshness’ by Henri Dutilleux, shines through in this scintillating piece.

Finally, the evening concludes with one of the great masterpieces of Romantic chamber music, Johannes Brahms’ second quartet in A minor – some of the most touching music he ever conceived.
