Major new exhibition on the birth of Pop Art at

ArtSpace 5-7 Portugal Place

The acclaimed Goldmark Gallery (jaw-dropping” Sunday Telegraph) has teamed up with Cambridge Charity ArtSpace 5-7 Portugal Place. Together they will stage an exciting exhibition of trailblazing British Pop Art at the city’s iconic modernist building and exhibition space – 5-7 Portugal Place. The show will feature vibrant pieces from renowned British artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Patrick Caulfield, Joe Tilson, Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Allen Jones, RB Kitaj, and Michael Rothenstein. The exhibition is opens to the public and will then run on Thursdays and Saturdays thereafter and by appointment into February. Admission is free. Those bowled over by British Pop will be able to buy the works by visiting the gallery in person or going online at goldmarkart.com/britishpop

Dr Anna M Dempster, Fellow of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge, heads up the Cambridge ArtSpace charity and she comments: “Many people think Pop Art was an American movement but this rebellion against traditional art was pioneered by the Brits who were inspired by consumer imagery to create vivid, brash and eye popping artworks. This major exhibition of over 50 pieces has been made possible by an exciting partnership between Cambridge ArtSpace 5-7 and Goldmark which is rightly hailed as one of the UK’s leading commercial galleries. We are hoping that sales will make a significant contribution to the charity’s funds.”

At the heart of the exhibition is an extraordinary collection of works by Eduardo Paolozzi, one of the original Pop Artists, and members of the 1950’s Independent Group. Among the highlights are signed collages from Paolozzi’s seminal “Bunk” series, which redefined modern art by incorporating mass media and technology into his designs. Also on display is an original design for the mosaic murals at Tottenham Court Road tube station, an enduring piece of public art that embodies Paolozzi’s genius. Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the energy and creativity of one of art’s most influential movements.

Mike Goldmark quote follows

Mike Goldmark, who founded Goldmark in Uppingham over 50 years ago, concludes: “This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the bold colours, striking visions, and cultural commentary that defined the Pop Art era. It is a must-see event for seasoned collectors, art enthusiasts and fans of the 60s alike. Goldmark has a lot of friends in Cambridge and we are delighted to have the chance to meet them on their home turf. It is also a real pleasure to be partnering with such a far sighted organization as Cambridge ArtsSpace 5-7 which strives to make the best of art available to all”.which strives to make the best of art available to all”.

*Note to editors   The “jaw-dropping” (Sunday Telegraph) Goldmark Gallery celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. It is an art and ceramics gallery, a four times RTS nominated film producer, Pro Moviemaker Magazine’s Film Maker of the Year 2024, book publisher, printmaker and scholarship hub. A selling gallery of national and international significance, it stands at the heart of the English market town of Uppingham, 90 minutes from London. In 2022 the Sunday Times wrote of the Goldmark Gallery:  “The biggest star, though, is the Goldmark art gallery, one of the best outside a capital city, whose exhibitions regularly feature works by artists you’d normally have to take a city break to see.”

The mission of Cambridge ArtSpace5-7 is to promote arts and ideas through education, exhibitions and events that engage and inspire the public and raise awareness of contemporary arts and culture for the public good. We believe that for art to be captivating it needs to display a dedication to experimentation and creativity, be grounded in the twin pillars of skill and ingenuity, and rooted in knowledge and expertise. Our exhibitions explore themes that transcend boundaries, translate across disciplines and aim to stimulate creative thinking, discussion and debate. We aim to provide a space for art which promotes cultural exchange and mutual understanding because we believe that people across disciplines and cultures are often fascinated by the same phenomenon and pre-occupied with similar fundamental questions about the nature of things.
