In her book Climbing Days, Dorothy Pilley vividly recounts her thrilling and daring mountaineering adventures in the early twentieth century, capturing the spirit of exploration that defined her life. To mark the long-awaited new edition of this classic, her great-great-nephew, writer Dan Richards, will give a talk celebrating her extraordinary achievements. As a pioneering figure in women’s alpinism and a key voice in early mountain literature, Dorothy’s legacy continues to inspire adventurers and readers alike.
Known as Dorothea Richards, Dorothy was also the wife of literary critic I.A. Richards and a close friend of T.S. Eliot, placing her at the heart of both literary and mountaineering circles. Dorothy’s Archive, housed at Magdalene College, contains a treasure trove of personal and professional materials, and a selection of these rarely seen items will be on display during the event.
Following the talk, there will be a drinks reception, offering attendees a chance to reflect on Dorothy’s remarkable life and work. Booking for this event is essential. Email us at pepysfriends@magd.cam.ac.uk.
