‘Robin Phillips Sings & Plays: Chet Baker ft. James Brady (Trumpet)’
For this dinner jazz event at Gonville Hotel, and as part of the Cambridge Jazz Festival 2026, jazz singer and pianist Robin Phillips performs the music of one of the legendary jazz singer / instrumentalists of the 20th century: jazz beau and bad boy Chet Baker.
Vocally, Robin is often compared with Chet Baker and to bring this music to life Robin continues his long-term connection with jazz trumpeter James Brady, whose melodic approach to soloing contributes to performing the songs made famous by Chet.
Robin and James recently travelled around Europe, interviewing musicians and other people who worked or knew Chet, for a brand new film documentary focussing on Chet’s life and music in Europe. The repertoire is therefore quite fluid as the group become inspired by important tunes that form part of this fascinating story, but the quartet will perform songs including Almost Blue, Do It The Hard Way, Let’s Get Lost, The Thrill Is Gone, and You Don’t Know What Love Is. There are a few Chet Baker tribute shows around today, but none gets as close to realising Chet’s essence as this pairing two of the UK’s most dedicated and passionate jazz talents.
