Make it with Marmalade Botanical Etching Workshop

At Marmalade we work in small sociable groups with lots of one-to-one tuition, in the relaxed and creative environment of our gorgeous, garden studio.

  • 4th October 2025
  • 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

If you love nature, this is the perfect workshop for you, as you will learn how to create prints of botanical images, inspired by the plants in our garden, using the Drypoint Etching process.

Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method which involves cutting your design into the surface of a plate with a sharp etching needle. At marmalade we like to use Perspex for our plates as it’s light and easy to handle. Prints produced from this process have a soft-edged line, suited to capturing flowers and foliage effectively.  Drypoint etching can also be used to create amazing and bold graphic images too, if that’s more your style.

You will have time to explore and collect plants from the garden for inspiration, reference our library for ideas and experiment with textures to get different effects in your prints.  For those with previous experience, we can help you refresh your skills, and you are welcome to spend the time working on your own botanical project, using our garden for reference.

We provide you with all the materials you need, along with tea, coffee, and cake, so you don’t need to bring anything with you, unless you have special dietary requirements. Young people over 14 years old are very welcome if they bring an adult with them, especially if they are studying GCSE art as this will enhance their exam portfolios.

Our teaching style is hands-on and practical so you will get to grips with printmaking rather than theory. Here’s what one of our students Vince says

“The surroundings, especially the garden, are beautiful and very calming. The course will inspire you to take up creative printmaking.”

Please note that, although we have aprons in the studio, we recommend that you don’t wear your best clothes when you visit us, as printmaking can be a bit messy.
