May Ball Fireworks Punting

May Week (confusingly now in June!) celebrates the end of the Cambridge University exams and is the biggest event in the University’s social calendar. Each college hosts its own May Ball, highlighting the end of the academic year. Each year, Trinity College & St Johns College include incredible fireworks displays aiming to be bigger and better than each other and last year! You can be there, taking it all in from a Chauffeured punt – undoubtedly the best vantage point.

The tradition of May Balls in Cambridge dates back to the 1800s, around the same time pleasure punting started gaining popularity. It wasn’t until the 1960s that these end-of-year celebrations evolved into the grand affairs they are today. Colleges began hosting their own unique balls, complete with orchestras, live bands, and elegant dinners.

Over the decades, these events have grown into lavish, all-night parties that often end with students punting through the early morning hours, sometimes even all the way to Grantchester.

If you’d like to experience this incredible spectacle, be sure to book early, tickets sell out fast. Each college now puts on its own fireworks display, with a bit of friendly competition to create the most impressive show over the River Cam.

It’s one of the most magical and in-demand times for punting. You can reserve a private boat for a more intimate experience, or join a shared tour and take in the views alongside other excited spectators.
