Odyssey of the lungs

Join Emma Rawlins and her team for a relaxed evening of drinks, nibbles, and discussion about the science of lung development.

  • 25th March 2025 - 25th March 2025
  • 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Did you know that we practice breathing long before we are born? A developing fetus starts inhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid around 8 weeks after conception. Researchers believe this movement plays a crucial role in lung development before birth.

But what else enables the lungs to develop so a baby is ready to take their first breath at birth? Could gaining a deeper understanding of lung development lead to advancements in repairing damaged or diseased lungs?

Join Emma Rawlins and her team for an evening of drinks, nibbles, discussion and discovery. Come for the science, stay for the conversation—don’t miss out on this exciting event.

This event is open to everyone – no prior knowledge of science is required!

Whether you’re simply curious or a seasoned expert, this is a space for everyone to explore, discuss and enjoy.

You can join us in-person at the Gurdon Institute or online (though if you join online you’ll have to provide your own drinks and nibbles).

Did you know?

Not many pubs can claim to have served a man a pint just after he’d discovered the secret of life itself, but The Eagle can! It was in this city centre pub that scientists Francis Crick and James Watson announced their discovery of DNA in the 1953.
