Rachel M. Butler: Lettering in Stone

This July, we are pleased to present an exhibition of Rachel M. Butler’s work, tracing her journey as a stone carver, with a selection of pieces created during her apprenticeship with the Lettering Arts Trust, coinciding with Cambridge Open Studios.

  • 4th July 2025 - 31st July 2025
  • 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

On display are hand-carved alphabets, finished works in greenslate and Portland stone, as well as her sketchbooks and carving tools, giving visitors a look into both the creative and technical sides of her craft.

Originally trained in graphic arts and illustration, Rachel discovered a passion for letterforms in stone and has been carving by hand since 2011. Her work is influenced by traditional techniques and guided by mentors Eric Marland and Tom Perkins, two master lettercarvers.

Visitors will also have a chance to see Rachel give a live demonstration of her carving process on Saturday, 5th July, held in the garden at 184 Gwydir Street.
