Day trips to Suffolk from Cambridge

Throughout July 2017 Esplora are running day tours from Cambridge to Suffolk. Two itineraries are availlable: The Villages of the Suffolk Wool Trade and Anglo-Saxon Suffolk.

The "Villages of the Suffolk Wool Trade" is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wanting to explore or photograph the beautiful scenery and half-timbered medieval houses of rural Suffolk. The tour runs each Thursday in July and takes you to the picturesque villages of Bartlow and Cavendish as well as to the medieval towns of Clare, Long Melford and Lavenham. You will be accompanied throughout by an experienced guide who will bring to life the history of these old Suffolk wool towns and tell your the history of the unique and extraordinary murals in the church in Bartlow and the church in Long Melford - considered by historian Simon Jenkins as one of the finest in England. We also take you to the Guildhall in Lavenham and the tudor hall at Long Melford.

The "Anglo-Saxon Suffolk" tour takes us to the estuary of the river Deben and the burial site of one of the Anglo-Saxon kings. In 1939, one of the most significant finds ever made on British soil, unearthed a warriors helmet and sword buried inside a wooden longship. These objects are now in the British Museum, London, but at the original site of Sutton Hoo, there is now a fascinating visitor centre which tells the story of these finds. We also go to visit the dramatic castle at Orford Ness and there is some free time in the afternoon at the picturesque seaside town of Aldburgh.

The tours depart from Cambridge at 9am and return by 5.30pm (6:30pm for the Anglo-Saxon Suffolk). Please see our website: www.esplora.co.uk/suffolk for a detailed map of the tour departure point and for the full tour itinerary.

You can book and pay for your tour via our website: www.esplora.co.uk/suffolk

The tour price includes the entrance to the National Trust properties of Melford Hall and Lavenham Guildhall (for the Villages of the Suffolk Wool Trade tour) and the National Trust property of Sutton Hoo and the English Heritage property of Orford Ness castle (for the Anglo-Saxon Suffolk tour).
