Ely Eel Festival Weekend

Ely is preparing itself once again for its four day extravaganza to celebrate the origins of the humble eel.  Organised by the Visit Ely team, Ely’s Eel Festival Weekend runs from 4th May to 7th May 2018.  This year, as always, we see the return of the Eel Food Safari which runs all weekend where a selection of local food outlets provide special dishes inspired by the eel theme.

The Eel Parade kicks off Saturday’s Eel Day with a colourful array of eels processing through Ely’s High Street, down to the river where a whole host of eel related activities take place.

Special highlights include the British Town Crier Championship which we are are honoured to be hosting this year.  Our very own Town Crier, Avril Hayter, will be organising this National event for up to 25 criers - so expect an explosion of colour and noise!  Then of course we have the World Eel Throwing Competition (no eels will be harmed in this competition, just stuffed toys!).  Can you beat the World Record of over 17 meters?  This fun activity is open to everyone.

In addition, we will be hosting our first ever Morris Festival where you will see a variety of Morris groups performing all around the city adding further merriment to the day.

We have a full programme of arena events in Jubilee Gardens including Folk Music, Eel Pottery Workshops, Music and Dancing, Historical Displays and Re-enactments with lots of family participation opportunities.  As you would imagine, eels feature massively in the day and there will be the chance to see live eels, courtesey of the Environment Agency.

Rounding up the weekend is the ever popular two day Food and Drink Festival where over 70 artisan and specialist food and drink traders will be showcasing their wares.

Located on Palace Green, in the shadow of the magnificent Ely Cathedral, at the very heart of this historic city, we have over 75 artisan food and drink traders, an expansive street food scene and amazing celebrity chefs demonstrating in our fabulous Cookery Theatre, sponsored by G’s Fresh.

The Street Food Scene, comprising of a range of culinary delights, which will tantalise your taste buds with the unusual, yet exquisitely put together combinations.  We also have a beer tent and gin and fizz bar with some easy listening live music to enjoy.

Located on St Mary's Green, outside the Tourist Information Centre, the Kitchen Pantry returns.  Here you will find a selection of goodies to help stock your pantry, some handy gadgets and beautiful kitchenware along with a seating area and some scrumptious light bites.

Celebrity Chef Line up

Each year we endeavour to bring an interesting and varied programme of local talented chefs and demonstrators as well as renowed chefs.  We are delighted to announce that this year we are welcoming the amazing talents of legends, Brian Turner and Rosemary Shrager to join us in the Cookery Theatre.

All in all, Ely will make the perfect place for a Spring Bank Holiday visit. For the full Ely Eel Festival programme check out www.elyeelfestival.co.uk
