Official Guided Tours: Fitzwilliam Museum Tour

Discover a treasure trove of world history and art, with our introductory tour.

Book an official introductory tour of the Fitzwilliam’s world-famous collections of art and antiquities.

The Fitzwilliam Museum, one of Cambridge’s most impressive landmarks, is one of the finest regional museums in Europe, presenting world history and art from as far back as 2500 BC to the present day.

This one-hour guided tour is the perfect introduction to its unique collections, including famous works by Rubens, Constable, Monet and Picasso and remarkable artefacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Cyprus and the ancient near east.

Throughout the museum there are also significant collections of oriental art, illuminated manuscripts, and outstanding collections of applied arts, pottery, porcelain and medieval coins.

Tours commence at the Courtyard entrance of the Museum at 14.30 on Saturdays throughout the year (only when the museum is open).

“Our tour guide, Catherine, made the museum come alive. She was helpful to my dear elderly mother, who really enjoyed it too as a consequence.”

England’s Historic Cities App

Visit Cambridge has partnered with 11 other heritage cities nationally to bring this exciting new product to Cambridge.

The England's Historic Cities App tells the story of the country's best loved heritage sites. Using innovative new mobile technology, visitors are given the chance to gain new insights into the history of 12 historic locations including our very own Fitzwilliam Museum.

The app uses state-of-the-art mobile technology to connect trigger points and camera phones to uncover augmented-reality displays, 3D reconstructions, and 360-degree panoramas.

Richard, VII Viscount Fitzwilliam, who donated his collection to University of Cambridge after his death, takes visitors on a virtual journey of history and culture from prehistoric times and ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, through to medieval Japan and modern-day Britain.
