Alice by Heart

‘Alice by Heart’ is a beautiful new musical dealing with first loves, grief, sexual awakening and overcoming life’s many obstacles. It is set during the height of World War 2 within the London Underground, and Wonderland is used as a form of escapism. This show is presented by the 3rd year musical theatre students as a part of the ARU Graduate Showcase, and the creative team include Pippa Duffy, Katy Graham-Clare and Ryan Murphy. ‘Alice by Heart’ will be performed by Anglia Ruskin University 3rd year Musical Theatre students as a part of the Graduate Showcase.

Alice by Heart’ is a new musical that flits between an underground bunker at the height of the World War Two Blitz, and the craziness of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland as our Alice attempts to escape the bleak wartime reality she inhabits.

The breathtaking score was written by the award-winning creators of Spring Awakening Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik and co-written by Jessie Nelson (who wrote Waitress) and premiered Off-Broadway in 2019, but has yet to be performed professionally in the UK, meaning Anglia Ruskin’s production will be one of the first UK productions!

Out creative team are Pippa Duffy as Director, Course Leader Ryan Murphy as Musical Director and Katy Graham-Clare as Choreographer. All three of them have worked  with leading industry professionals as creatives, teachers and performers, promising for a very-high quality show.

More about the plot:

Fifteen-year-old Alice, her dear friend Alfred, and an unlikely group are forced to take refuge in the London Underground during the rubble of the London Blitz in World War II. Alice’s world is turned upside down due to Alfred contracting tuberculosis and being quarantined. Alice, not wanting to face this reality, encourages Alfred to escape with her, into their most cherished book; ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. As they travel through the rabbit hole, the story captures the strength of first loves, grief, sexual awakening and overcoming life’s many obstacles.

This is a show to not be missed, so come and join the cast in Wonderland! ‘Alice by Heart’ will be in the Mumford Theatre from the 2nd-4th of May 2024.
