ABOUT THE PLAY City of Angels takes place in the glamorous city of Los Angeles, California. Located in Hollywood, Stine, a novelist who is attempting to turn his novel into a screenplay, fights to save his friendships, his career, and his marriage. As he creates the story about Stone, a private detective, the characters in Stine’s screenplay come to life on stage.

City of Angels, a Larry Gelbart, is a satirical musical comedy with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by David Zippel, and a book by Larry Gelbart. The show takes a humorous and critical look at Hollywood through the eyes of Stine, a successful writer who is adapting his latest novel into a film.

The musical explores two parallel storylines – one following Stine’s struggles to adapt his novel, and the other taking place within the world of the film he is creating. The musical is also an ode to the classic film noir genre of the 1940s.

Did you know?

The city’s name is known around the world, but it wasn’t always called Cambridge. In the Middle Ages it was known as Grantabridge, meaning the bridge over the river Granta (one of the sources of the River Cam).
