Secret Byrd

Witness the extraordinary theatrical concert Secret Byrd, which celebrates the 400 year legacy of William Byrd, one of England’s finest composers. The Gesualdo Six collaborate with Fretwork in an immersive performance by candlelight, created and directed by Bill Barclay and produced by Concert Theatre Works.

  • 4th December 2023 - 4th December 2023
  • 6:00 pm

We are delighted to be bringing Secret Byrd to St John’s College Chapel in Cambridge on Monday 4 December.

The musicians gather by candlelight to worship in secret as Byrd’s incredible Mass for 5 voices is theatrically interspersed with his virtuosic music for strings. The event is secular yet staged to invite the audience into the deeply personal use that Byrd intended – a private mass for secret worship.

Performance Times
The performance is approximately 80 minutes without an interval, and there will be 2 shows on the evening.

  • Performance 1 – 18:00
  • Performance 2 – 20:30

There will be one moment of complete blackout during the performance.
