Shakespeare at the George – Much Ado About Nothing

The 2023 Shakespeare at the George open-air summer production is Much Ado About Nothing, set in Renaissance Italy and played out in The George Hotel’s Jacobean courtyard

  • 27th June 2023 - 8th July 2023
  • 7:30 pm - 7:30 pm

For over 60 years, Shakespeare at The George has produced an annual play by William Shakespeare performed in the open air in the wonderful Jacobean courtyard of The George Hotel in Huntingdon, which was once the home of Oliver Cromwell’s grandfather and later the headquarters of Charles I.

In 2023, the open-air summer production will be Much Ado About Nothing, one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies and is generously supported by Urban & Civic.

In Renaissance Italy, a wealthy merchant welcomes a victorious Duke and his entourage to his Tuscan Villa where they enjoy feasting, dancing, revelry and romance. However, the actions of an angry, vengeful man threaten to destroy friendships and ruin lives; but is foiled by the intervention of the ‘intrepid’ Night Watch. Join us in the atmospheric surroundings of the Jacobean courtyard for this sparkling comedy which is a melting pot of undiscovered love, courtship, treachery, deceit, gallantry and honour; spiced up with verbal jousting, social-climbing and general buffoonery.

Running from 27th June to 8th July (except Sunday 2nd July) everyone is welcome, with reduced price tickets for U16’s. As part of our commitment to accessible theatre for all, we host Stagetext (kindly supported by the Evelyn Glennie Foundation) and Touch Tour nights during the summer show run. Please see the events listings for dates.
