Sport and Leisure

Make the most of your time in Cambridge & Beyond by sampling some of the sports the city is known for. There have been 158 Boat Races between the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford and visitors will see many of the city’s rowing clubs being coached on the River Cam, come rain or shine.

A must-see Cambridge tradition is the Bumps, a bizarre rowing race that’s taken place on the Cam since the 1820s. Crews line-up their boats along the river to chase and ‘bump’ the boat in front before they are bumped by the boat behind.

If you want to keep fit and active Cambridge & Beyond is a great place to be.  Runners will love the many paths and tracks around the city, beside the River Cam and through the meadows combining good running routes with splendid views.

Cambridge is one of the most beautifully stunning city's in the world to enjoy - and walking is one the best ways to take in the sights.

Head to one of the many green spaces in Cambridge where you can kick a ball, play cricket or try your hand at tennis.

Parker’s Piece is a green space used by locals to lounge around and play football and cricket on the grass; it is famous as the place where, in 1848, students agreed a set of simple guidelines for football which were to influence the development of the Football Association rules. Football fans can also catch a game on the home turfs of the city’s two teams, Cambridge United and Histon Football Club.

Cambridge & Beyond has many stunning golf courses for you to enjoy, offering courses suitable for beginners to pro standard!

There are numerous leisure centres and gyms with a choice of classes and personal trainers at hand to help devise the ultimate fitness programme.

Take to the water and swim at one of the city’s swimming pools or make the most of summer and head to Jesus Green where the open-air pool provides a perfect place to cool down on a sunny day.

Visitors keen to keep active can try their hand at punting and boating on the river - or, if you prefer to slow the pace, sit back, relax and enjoy the view on a chauffeured punt.

Cambridge is a city of cyclists and there is no better way to explore the city and surrounding countryside than cycling on two wheels.

Visitors and residents are encouraged to take part in the many sporting events that take place throughout the year, including various Cambridge walks, street games and other team sports including football and netball competitions for all ages.
